West Stow Country Park
West Stow Country Park, Suffolk
Based on excavations of an early Anglo Saxon settlement dating to the fifth century, an Anglo Saxon village has been recreated at West Stow near Bury St Edmunds in Suffolk. Visitors can explore the buildings and watch recreations of Angle Saxon life going on around them. There is also an Anglo Saxon centre with displays illustrating life during the fifth, sixth and seventh centuries. The village is set in an attractive country park,which has a children's play area and a cafe. There are walking trails through the varied landscape of the park, around the lake, and beside the river Lark.
Opening Times: The Anglo-Saxon Village and Anglo-Saxon Centre are open 10am to 5pm daily. Last entry is 4pm in Summer and 3:30pm in Winter. The country park is open 9am - 5pm in Winter and 9am - 8pm in Summer. The opening times for the cafe and shop vary seasonally.
Directions: Take the A1101 north from St Albans for about even miles, and follow brown tourist signs. Click here for an interactive map centred on the Angle Saxon Village.
Access: there is wheelchair access to some areas,although it would be wise to check before hand if you wish to see a specific area. Disabled toilet facilities are available. Touch and handling sessions are organised periodically. Contact the park for details.
