Trevarno Estate And Gardens, (and National Museum of Gardening) Cornwall

Trevarno has been in existence since 1245, run by a succession of wealthy families as a self supporting estate. It seemed that this long established estate would be broken up in 1994 when Trevarno was put up for sale in 33 lots. Businessman Mike Sagin and his partner Nigel Helsby were looking for a country house to use as a headquarters, and after viewing Trevarno they became determined to buy the property and restore it as a complete working estate of 750 acres. In a project similar to that undertaken at the Lost Gardens Of Heligan, Sagin and his team got to work on a massive restoration. Work started in 1996 with the aim of completing a sensitive restoration, which would nevertheless be a viable modern business. Two years later in March 1998 the gardens were formally opened to the public, and a small museum dedicated to the history of gardening was established. It is an indication of the continuing interest in gardening that Trevarno did well, and interest and support for the gardening museum led to the creation of Britain's first National Museum of Gardening. Opening in 2001, and arranged in ten themed areas, this is the largest collection of gardening related items in Britain. Trevarno also has the Henry Doubleday Heritage Seed Library Garden dedicated to the preservation of a range of plant species, and is home to the National Daffodil Collection Show Garden, which grows a staggering 2,600 varieties. Flowering of the daffodils starts in January and continues through to May.

Trevarno also has a Vintage Toy Collection, a Soap Collection, linked to its own range of plant based cosmetics, a woodland adventure play area, and a lovely tea room in a large conservatory full of plants.
