Trengwainton Garden, Cornwall

The walled garden at Trengwainton, built to the dimensions of Noah's Ark

Trengwainton Garden near Penzance in Cornwall is an impressive example of the influence of industrialisation on gardening. From the late eighteenth century, in a reaction against the new industrialised world, gardens became idealised pieces of nature. But they nevertheless reflected technological change in the way gardeners characteristically used new methods of transportation to collect plants from all around the world, and put them in English gardens. The warm climate of south west England resulted in many gardens featuring exotic plants being established in this region. The twenty five acre garden at Trengwainton, landscaped by Sir Rose Price of Penzance, is among the most impressive. Plants include rhododendrons and bananas.

The restored walled garden at Trengwainton was for some reason built to the exact dimensions of Noah's Ark.
