Trelissik Garden, Cornwall

In 1750 John Lawrence inherited the manor of Trelissik near Truro in Cornwall and built a house overlooking the Fal estuary. Trees were planted and grassed areas created for mixed grazing. This landscape was something between a farm and a garden. In 1805 Ralph Allen Daniell bought Trelissik and continued developing this kind of mixed working landscape. Then a downturn in the mining industry damaged the Daniell fortunes, and in 1844 John Davies Gilbert purchased the property. The fashion now was for planting exotic foreign plants brought to England by the famous Victorian plant hunters. Many of these plants were planted initially in Cornwall and Devon gardens, taking advantage of the mild climate. This is what happened at Trelissik. The collection at Trelissik includes maples, a wide range of rhododendrons and azaleas, eucalyptus, ginkgo and palms. The main lawn in shaded by a Japanese cedar.

Passing through two more owners the gardens finally ended up in the stewardship of Ida Copeland, who donated the garden to the National Trust in 1955. While the Copeland family still live in a private house on the estate, the garden is run by the Trust. Fittingly for a garden which embraced the excitement of change in the nineteenth century, Trelissik today combines conservation of the former garden with a vigorous programme of new and experimental planting.
