Tower Bridge, London Tower Bridge marks the gateway to Docklands. Building a bridge downstream from London Bridge was long considered impossible since this part of the river was used by large ships. The Brunels built a tunnel between Rotherhithe and Wapping, but a bridge seemed out of the question. Eventually pressure of traffic drove the building of what was at the time the world's biggest and most technically advanced "bascule" bridge. Opening took place in 1894.
Tower Bridge has a permanent exhibition housed in the upper walkway high above the road. This walkway was originally intended for pedestrians to use when the bridge was open.
