There have been horse racing stables in Newmarket since the reign of James the First. and a race course since around 1671. The National Horse racing Museum in Newmarket's High Street offers one of the world's best collections related to horse racing and horse racing history. The Gallery is staffed by retired jockeys and trainers who are always on hand to answer questions about the exhibits, and about the world of horse racing. Daily mini bus tours are offered of working racing establishments in Newmarket. This is a two hour tour in which visitors will see horses at close quarters and meet stable staff. Tours leave the Museum at 9.20am on days when the Museum is open. There are also special tours, such as the All Day Racing Tour, and a tour to the National Stud. See the web site for details. There is a gift shop and cafe.
The Museum is open daily 11am - 4.30pm, from 18th March until 2nd November, last admission 4pm. The museum is open from 10am on race days.
