The George, Norton St Philip

The George is a fourteenth century inn built to accommodate traders who came to the annual wool fairs held in Norton St Philip near Bath from the thirteenth century until 1902. The diarist Samuel Pepys stayed here. The Duke of Monmouth, illegitimate son of Charles the Second had his headquarters at the George during his attempt to snatch the throne from his brother James the Second in 1685. There's a Monmouth room at the George, and the table in the room is supposed to be the one where Monmouth and his advisors sat to discuss their plans.

The George continues as a hotel, restaurant and bar.
