Gallery Of Costume, ManchesterManchester's Gallery of Costume is housed in Platt Hall, the former home of an eighteenth century textile merchant. It's collection of 20,000 items is one of the biggest in Britain. The collection covers all types of clothing - expensive and everyday - from the seventeenth century to modern times. Items are grouped in themes, by historical period, or in groups such as "Designers", "Clothes For Work", or "Materials and Making". Only a small part of the complete collection is on display at any one time, but there is a comprehensive data base available to explore the rest of the collection. The museum also holds a large number of fashion periodicals which are available to view on application. Use contact details below.
There is a shop selling postcards, books and gift inspired by fashion. There are no refreshment facilities, although there are many places to eat close by.
