The Fashion Museum, Bath

Doris Langley Moore was one of Britain's first fashion historians, beginning her collection in the early 1920s with fashion plates, and then moving on to items of clothing. Each item she collected had to represent the fashion of its period. In 1963 Moore decided to donate her by now impressive collection to the city of Bath, and in this way the Museum of Costume, later renamed the Fashion Museum, was founded. The museum now explores fashion history from the sixteenth century onwards, and has collections representing all branches of clothing fashion. Perhaps the most famous display is the Dress of the Year. Each year since 1963 a dress has been selected to represent its year, and all dresses selected can be viewed at the museum. Dresses include pieces by Mary Quant, Jean Muir, John Galliano, Jean-Paul Gaultier and Donatella Versace.
