The Electric Cinema
The Electric Cinema
The oldest purpose built cinema in Britain was opened in Colne Lancashire in 1907. The building still stands, but it is no longer used as a cinema. The oldest cinema still in use is London's Electric Cinema, opened in 1911 in the Portobello Road. After falling into a sad state of disrepair in the 1960s the cinema has now been restored. As often happens it was a decline in fortunes that acted to preserve the Electric. The Electric Cinema's dilapidation in the 1960s helped preserve the original interior, since there was no money available for modernisation. The cinema now shows art house and mainstream films in the original auditorium. There are leather armchair style seats with tables for food and drink. The bar serves cocktails, wine, beer and champagne, as well as soft drinks and snacks.
Directions: The cinema is in Portobello Road, near the junction with Colville Terrace andElgin Crescent. Clickhere for an interactive road and satellite map centred on the Electric Cinema.
Access: the cinema is accessible to wheelchair users. Please contact the cinema before hand. An infrared transmitter is installed in the auditorium for the hard of hearing.
