Carn Euny

Carn Euny in Cornwall is the remains of a small collection of Iron Age houses dating from around 200BC. The stone foundations can be seen, which give an idea of the layout of the settlement. The best preserved feature of the site is an underground passage known as a fogou. Quite why this passage, and others like it, were built is not known. A great amount of work must have gone into the fogou's construction, so the motivation behind building it must have been powerful.

Opening Times: The site is open seven days at week, at "any reasonable time", says English Heritage.

Directions: Carn Euny is off the A30 west of Penzance. Turn right at Drift, and follow signs to Brane. There is a carpark at Brane. The site of the village itself reached by a footpath. Click here for an interactive map centred on Carn Euny.
