Carn Euny
Carn Euny, Cornwall
Carn Euny in Cornwall is the remains of a small collection of Iron Age houses dating from around 200BC. The stone foundations can be seen, which give an idea of the settlement's layout. The best preserved feature is an underground passage known as a fogou. Quite why this passage, and others like it, were built is not known. A great amount of work must have gone into the fogou's construction, so the motivation behind building it must have been powerful.
Opening Times: The site is open seven days at week, at "any reasonable time", say English Heritage.
Directions: Carn Euny is off the A30 west of Penzance in Cornwall. Turn right at Drift, and follow signs to Brane. There is a carpark at Brane. The site of the village itself is reached by a footpath. Click here for an interactive map centred on Carn Euny.
