Bere Castle
Bere Castle, Wales

Bere is a Welsh castle in isolated countryside north of Abergynolwyn. It was built for Llywellyn the Great, and in April 1283 was the last castle to fall to Edward I during his invasion of Wales. There isn't much left of Bere Castle now, but the ruins, and their dramatic location remain interesting. The site offers beautiful views of surrounding Welsh landscape, and many artists go to Bere for this reason.
Directions: The drive to Bere Castle passes the breathtaking Cadair Idris, second highest summit in Wales. Take the B4405 to Abergynolwyn in north west Wales.
Access: Bere Castle has open access but no toilet facilities. The nearest toilets are close to St Michael's Church at Llanfihangel-y-Pennant. The paths are rocky and would be impossible for wheelchair users.
