Abbey House was built in 1914 by Edwin Lutyens, one of the greatest British architects of the early twentieth century. He designed many English country houses, Castle Drogo, the Cenotaph memorial in London, and played a central role in designing and building New Delhi in India as an administrative centre. Abbey House was owned by Commander Craven, Chairman of the Vickers Shipbuilding company. Many dignitaries visited including King George the Fifth and the Queen Mother.
